"Lighting energy bill cut from 61Kpa to 33Kpa at Birmingham’s premier location"
The Mailbox is Birmingham’s premier shopping and lifestyle location with exclusive stores, restaurants, café bars and hotels. It is the ultimate destination for designer shopping in the Midlands with international brands as well as chic salons & spas in one central Birmingham location.
The Mailbox is constantly committed to reducing its carbon footprint and has already undertaken several energy reducing projects . The building management team are also aware of their commitment in line with the Carbon Reduction Commitment Scheme (CRC) which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 1.2 million tonnes of carbon per year.
"energy monitoring provided proven saving rates & established a clear case for the project"
Lighting Solutions UK Limited undertook a survey of the lighting at The Mailbox underground car park. We found the site had nearly 2000 5ft fluorescent lamps burning on a 24/7 basis, costing £61,390.00 on an annual basis. There was no option to install occupancy detection as constant illumination was required. During a trial of TubeSaver on-site energy monitoring provided detailed energy consumption rates. This established a new running cost of £32,690.00 per annum, a sound business case for the project to proceed.
The chosen solution was to upgrade to TubeSaver® reflector series. TubeSaver® offers rapid payback because it gives impressive energy savings of up to 65%, with no need to change existing luminaires & therefore little disruption and lower installed cost. A sample area was installed, assessed over a period of months to ensure compatibility and prove that lighting levels would be maintained. TubeSaver® has an integral high frequency ballast and uses new generation T5 tube which doubles tube life & therefore reduces on-going maintenance and disposal costs.
"tube life doubled…reducing on-going costs…280 tonnes of CO2 pa saved & payback in 8 months"
Overall, the project has reduced CO2 emissions by 280 tonnes per annum and is saving £28,700.00 per year at current electricity rates. This has provided a return on investment & payback in 8 months.
